Our Story

Every couple has their story—this one is ours.
Facebook Dating
By Monica Nance
It all started on Facebook Dating (yes, Facebook had a dating site). As I clicked through profiles with no real expectations, I got a match. This one felt different. His profile caught my attention, especially a photo of him with a cat. As a fellow cat owner, that immediately stood out—I never expected to come across a man with a cat. That small detail opened the door.
Our very first exchange was me asking, “Is that your cat?”
That question was just the beginning of discovering how much we had in common. We spent the week talking, and soon after, Akeem asked me to brunch on April 18, 2021.
We met at a quaint brunch spot in my neighborhood. It was still during COVID, so masks were required and caution was the norm. The weather was beautiful, so we sat outside. Conversation flowed easily—comfortable, natural, and surprisingly unawkward for a first date.
After brunch, neither of us wanted the day to end. We took a walk through the neighborhood, talking more and admiring the local art displays. When we finally parted ways, I left wanting to know more. He left open to seeing where things would go.
NFL and Taco Tuesdays
By Akeem Scrubb
Monica and I quickly realized that our connection went far beyond cats everyday conversation—it was built in the stands, surrounded by the energy of the crowd. Whether we were cheering on the Atlanta Falcons on a Sunday afternoon, watching the Minnesota Vikings battle it out, catching a summer game with the Atlanta Braves, or joining the electric atmosphere at an Atlanta United FC match, those shared experiences brought us closer together.
High-fives after big plays, friendly debates over rivalries, and celebrating victories side by side created memories that strengthened our bond. Through every season, win or lose, our love for the game—and for each other—has only grown stronger.
We fell in love through tacos, too. What started as casual dinner dates turned into a shared ritual of searching for the perfect tortilla, deciding our favorite fillings, and daring each other to try new flavors. Before long, Taco Tuesday became our sacred weekly tradition—a time set aside no matter how busy life felt. Whether we were experimenting in the kitchen or checking out a local spot, those evenings gave us space to laugh, connect, and simply enjoy being together. Somewhere between the salsa spills and second helpings, our love for tacos turned into a deeper bond that we now cherish every single week.
Through Tough Times We Grew Stronger
By Monica and Akeem
Monica and I have stood by each other through some of the hardest moments of our lives, and those seasons deepened our love in ways we never expected. I was there for her when she lost her beloved cat, sitting with her in the quiet grief that comes with saying goodbye to a cherished companion. I was also by her side when she was in the hospital during COVID, holding onto hope and doing everything I could to support her through the uncertainty.
When my business began to struggle and I had to rely on gig apps to make ends meet, Monica never wavered—she encouraged me, believed in me, and reminded me of my strength on the days I felt defeated. Through loss, illness, and financial hardship, we chose each other again and again, proving that our love isn’t just built on the good times, but on resilience, loyalty, and unwavering support.
